The are literally thousands of web sites devoted to genealogy, ranging from the 1-3 page personal sites to several thousand page sites with huge amounts of information.  There is a vast amount of information freely available on these web sites, as well as paid subscriptions to data on the commercial sites.  I would recommend searching the freely available information first to further your research.  Then research the commercial sites to see what they have available, the cost involved and determine which options may be best for you.  I have only listed three of the free sites, however, they should lead you to any site that is available.

Free Sites.
USGenWeb Absolutely the best place to start your search.  The national page has links to each state project which in turn has links to each county project within the state.  The national page also has links to a number of additional projects (i.e., census, maps, archives, etc.).
Rootsweb The largest and oldest free genealogy site, it is now supported by Ancestry (see below).  It hosts many of the state and county websites for the USGenWeb Project (above), as well as numerous other projects.  Rootsweb also maintains an extensive number of mailing lists (by county, surname, etc.) where you have the opportunity to reach out to other researchers with similar interests.
Cyndy's List Cyndy's List is probably the best known and oldest list of genealogy sites on the internet.  Around since 1996, it now has in excess of 200,000 links.  It is well organized by categories and searchable.
